Nom du producteur

St. Elizabeth Anglican Church (Springfield, P.E.I.)

Histoire administrative

In 1838, Sir Gabriel Wood and Lady Louisa Augusta Wood conveyed twenty-five acres of land in Springfield for a church in which "worship be performed according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of England." Assisted by his seven sons, Thomas Haslam erected the St. Elizabeth Anglican Church in 1848. Dedicated in memory of Thomas Haslam's wife, the St. Elizabeth Anglican Church was consecrated in 1849, by Reverend John Medley, Bishop of Nova Scotia. Reverend J. Herbert Read was the first rector. Since its erection, the affairs of the church have been chiefly directed by a direct descendant of Thomas Haslam. Prior to 1848, the Anglican congregation of Springfield had to go to New London to worship.

Histoire administrative

Construction began on the first Anglican church in Crapaud in 1841, on land donated by the Countess of Westmorland. The first rector of the "Church of St. John the Evangelist" was Reverend J. Herbert Read. Under Rector T.W. Johnston (1874-1888) the church was repaired and renovated, the rectory remodeled and the barn rebuilt. On 16 April 1900, a committee was appointed to solicit subscriptions for the building of a new church. Reverend Charles Cumming became rector in 1901 when the present church building was completed. The architect was James Harris of Charlottetown and the contractors were Messrs. John, Lemuel, and Samuel Haslam. Organizations that have been active within St. John's church throughout the years include the Girls Auxiliary, Junior Auxiliary, Little Helpers, Darcas, Social Service, Prayer Partner, Saving Conveyors, and Sunday school groups.
