The series consists of records of Andrew Archibald Macdonald (14 February 1829 - 12 March 1919) for the period 1851 to 1912. The series contains correspondence, primarily to his brother Archibald John Macdonald. These letters deal with family, business, and political activities and make reference to an ailing Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald in 1891. The series also contains tenders for the construction of a Catholic Church in Georgetown (1852), a list of delegates from the 1864 Quebec Conference on Confederation, correspondence from Edward Whelan (1866), a portion of a printed speech given by Macdonald as Lieutenant Governor on the Opening of the General Assembly (1887), a reprinted copy of a letter from Macdonald to the Editor of the "Montreal Gazette" regarding details of the 1864 Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences (1909), some biographical information, and a clipping regarding Macdonald’s death (1919). Two clippings regarding the opening of the A. A. Macdonald Memorial Gardens in Georgetown are also included (ca. 1993-1994). The series also contains a memorandum outlining an event that took place in the smoking room, probably at Province House, involving Mr. Coles, Mr. Whelan, Mr. Pope, Mr. Macdonald, Mr. Brecken, and Mr. Walker, regarding comments Mr. Coles allegedly made about Confederation and the Quebec Conference. The item is undated and the Macdonald mentioned is not identified; however, it is believed it may have been Andrew Archibald Macdonald.
