History

Belle River is located eleven miles west of Murray River, Prince Edward Island . It is unclear when the Church of Scotland congregation was established in this community, but it is known that Reverend Donald MacDonald (1793-1867), first Church of Scotland minister on PEI, began ministering in the Murray River area circa 1826. It appears that the Belle River congregation and that of Brooklyn came under one charge and that Reverend MacDonald played an integral role in establishing the two churches. It is documented that in the winter of 1902, the Belle River Church was relocated to land purchased from Joseph Saunders, where it presently stands.
