History

The Belmont Baptist Church was organized at a meeting at the Belmont, Prince Edward Island, school house on March 22, 1876. The church was composed of twenty members dismissed from Summerside and eleven newly baptised members from the Belmont area. It was arranged that the pastorate would share the services of Rev. J.F. Murray of Summerside. A meeting house was begun that summer and finished in 1881. Meanwhile, in 1878, Rev. J.B. Woodland was appointed to the Cavendish and Belmont missions. He left in 1884 to be followed by a succession of pastors. At various different periods through the years the church was united with the missions of Northam, Summerside, and Bedeque. Extensive renovations to the church building took place in the decades prior to 1979.
