History

The Birch Grove Women's Institute of Freetown, Prince Edward Island, held their first monthly meeting in the home of Vice-President Mrs. Everett Schurman on the evening of February 4, 1932. Mrs. Austin Scales served as the first President and Jean Mathieson was the first Secretary-Treasurer. The group met monthly and participated in many community oriented activities such as supporting the school, visiting the sick, and organizing the Water Safety Program. They also contributed to other organizations, the Red Cross for instance.
