History

John Brecken, a Loyalist, settled in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on 26 July 1784. Shortly after his arrival, John established John Brecken & Company, a mecantile business, on the corner of Queen and Water Streets. Ralph Brecken (1770-1813), son of John, senior, was a leading Island exporter in the firm of Brecken & Company. After his death, his wife Matilda Robinson, daughter of Lt. Colonel Joseph Robinson continued to operate the family business until her death in 1842. John and Ralph, sons of Ralph and Matilda, were both involved in Brecken & Company.
