Scope and content
This fonds consists of a seventeen page brief discussing federal institutions such as the CBC, the National Film Board, National Gallery, National Museum and the National Library and provincial efforts in the way of archives, libraries, drama, and music, making recommendations with a view to establishing a Canadian cultural identity and providing more cultural opportunities in PEI and other rural communities.
In 1949/50 the Canadian government set up a royal commission to examine the state of the arts and cultural activities in Canada and to formulate ways to encourage development in these areas. Under the umbrella of the PEI Adult Education Council, of which most were members, the following organizations presented this brief to the Commission: Charlottetown Little Theatre Guild, Harris Memorial Gallery and Legislative Library, Visual Education Branch Dept. of Education, PEI Arts and Crafts Guild, PEI Drama Festival Association, PEI Musical Festival Association, PEI Arts Society, PEI Libraries, PEI Teachers Federation, PEI Women's Institutes, PEI Federation of Agriculture, St. Dunstan's University Extension Department.
