Cable house, Cape Traverse (P.E.I.)

Administrative history

Telegraphic service between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island began in November of 1852 after the installation of North America's first submarine cable between Cape Tormentine, NB, and Cape Traverse, PEI. The cable came up through the floor of the cable house (or hut) built on the shore of Capt. Lewis Muttart's land at Cape Traverse. The telegraphic service was initially operated by the Newfoundland and P.E.I. Electric Telegraph Company, which envisioned the service as a link in the transatlantic telegraph line; however, it never became more than a local service. The cable house apparently served as the telegraph office until 1877 when a new office was opened in Carleton. The cable house was possibly abandoned in the 1930's when it was decided a new cable house was required.
