Biographical history

Cecilia Lefurgey was born in 1864 to the Hon. John Lefurgey and his wife Dorothea, (formerly Read). John Lefurgey, born in Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, in 1825, was a prominent Summerside and area merchant- shipbuilder and politician. Cecilia attended Mount Allison Ladies College between 1880 and 1882 and studied voice at The New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, between 1883 and 1886. She married James Edward Wyatt, a lawyer from Summerside, in 1890. Wanda and Dorothy Wyatt were their children. Cecilia Wyatt died in 1937.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of correspondence and miscellaneous memorabilia, the majority of which is addressed to Cecilia Lefurgey, and postmarked between 1881 and 1896. Letters are written by family members, friends, teachers, and by J. E. Wyatt. The letters are of a personal nature, discussing her family and their travels, school life, travel arrangements, social functions, and the like. Other correspondence includes letters to John Lefurgey, Dorothea, J. E. Wyatt, and to Dorothy and Wanda Wyatt. Memorabilia includes invitations to social functions, wedding announcements, death notices and obituaries for Cecilia's brother Charles who died in 1883, postcards, and a copy of the program for the "Sherwood's Queen" which played in Summerside on 10 April 1902.
