Biographical history

The Crapaud Women's Institute was organized in Crapaud, Prince Edward Island, in March 1828 with the help of a Mrs. Murchison of Victoria, PEI, a member of one of the oldest Women's Institutes in the province. The primary focus of the Crapaud Women's Institute's activities was the betterment of the local school for which the members raised money for such things as furnishings, maps, books, prizes, and treats. In 1929, the Institute was involved in raising funds for the construction of a community hall which provided the membership with a meeting room. Other activities of the Institute included providing music in the schools, donating funds to the library, preparing boxes for the Red Cross to ship overseas during World War II, and operating the canteen in the South Shore Arena. The members also sponsored dental clinics, water safety courses, and blood donor clinics. In 1955, the Institute compiled a history of the community of Crapaud and a brief history of the organization itself.
