History

Charles Daly was born in Ireland in 1808 and came to Canada early in life. He held the title of City Clerk of Toronto from 1835 until his death in 1864. In addition to his position at City Hall, Charles Daly was also a painter and art teacher, exhibiting mainly landscapes.

Charles Daly may have been brother to John Cory Wilson Daly, another amateur artist of Irish descent who lived in Upper Canada between 1825 and 1878, and Sir Dominick Daly. Sir Dominick Daly was Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from 1854 to 1857.
