Hodgson, Daniel (1803-1883)

Biographical history

Daniel Hodgson was born on the 4 October 1803, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, to Robert Hodgson and Rebecca Robinson, formerly of Surrey, England. Daniel married three times, first to Lydia Cambridge MacGowan on the 22 November 1832. Three years later Lydia died on the 18 May 1835, at twenty-five years of age. On the 31 January 1839, Daniel married Mary Wright. They had two sons, Edward Jarvis, born on the 29 July 1840 and George Wright on the 15 January 1842. Mary died less then a month after the birth of their second child on the 3 February 1842, at twenty-seven years of age. Daniel re-married for the third time to Margaret Leah De St. Croix on the 20 April 1852, who died on the 18 January 1878 at seventy-two years of age.

In 1830, Daniel became the chief coroner for PEI. Throughout his life he had many titles bestowed upon him such as: Lloyd's agent for P. E. I. in 1831; Prothonotary and Clerk of the Crown in 1839; Judge of Probate by James Warburton in the absence of the Honorable Charles Young in 1853; Commissioner for issuing treasury notes, Commissioner for affidavits in the Supreme Court, and Clerk of the Crown for Justices of the Peace throughout PEI in 1864. Outside of his professional duties, Daniel also belonged to the Library Society in 1832, and is recorded as a church warden for St. Peter's Anglican Church in 1845. Daniel Hodgson died on the 21 July 1883 in his eightieth year.

Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a rent book dated 1815 to 1851, which belonged to Robert Hodgson and contains entries for rents paid in Lot 18. A ledger, dated 1832 to 1842, contains the division of the estate of Daniel's father, Robert Hodgson. A letter book of Daniel Hodgson from 1832 to 1840, contains copies of letters he wrote from Charlottetown, many of which deal with a court case against a Quebec trader named Baraque, in which Hodgson acted as attourney for the Warr Brothers of Charlottetown. This letter book also contains entries from the 1830 court minutes, which are located at the back of the book. The fonds also includes an undated account statement of Daniel Breynan with Daniel Hodgson.
