Scope and content

Donald Dewar and his wife Betty Irving, and James Dewar and his wife Ann MacFarlane were all born in Perthshire, Scotland and came to PEI with their families between 1808 and 1820. Each couple had seven children, though one of Donald’s daughters could not be accounted for on PEI. The photographs are believed to be predominantly from the Donald Dewar and Betty Irving line, more specifically from the family of their son John Dewar. Jonh Dewar was born in Cean na Coille, Foss, Perthshire on 24 March 1879 and settled in Cross Roads. PEI in 1820. Johna and his wife Isabella (Douglas) Dewar’s children were Donald, John, Joseph, Robert, Jessie, Jane, Elizabeth, Catherine, James and Alexander.

Volumes one and two were in the possession of Catherine “Kate” Dewar (wife of Rev. Dr. John Knox) of Lot 48 (Crossroads) until her death in 1937. They were then transferred to the possession of her grandniece Jessie Norton Beck, daughter of Catherine Dewar and Egerton Norton of Bellview Farm (Bellview became the Golf Academy at Brudenell Golf Course).

Volume 4 was Irene Dewar’s photograph album (ca. 1930-1950, 1975).

This series consists of four albums of photographs (ca. 1860-1967). The first two volumes of photographs are believed to be predominantly he family of John Dewar and his wife Isabella Douglas. The third volume is predominantly twentieth century photographs of descendant family members. The fourth album contains images of the Dewars of New Perth and Summerside, nurses at the Prince County Hospital and nurses and children at the McGill Rehabilitation Centre.
