Notice biographique
Sarah Christine Eileen (MacKinnon) Oulton, the daughter of James A. MacKinnon and Annie Floy Gorrill, was born in Coleman, Prince Edward Island, on 7 June 1911. She attended graduate school at Mount Allison Ladies College earning her diploma in applied arts. She was married to Mr. Willard Oulton in 1935, and they lived in Westmount, Quebec, for several years before returning to Alberton.
In the spring of 1965, Mrs. Oulton opened up the barn in her backyard as the Alberton Museum. The museum became known as one of the finest small museums in Eastern Canada. It opened as a private museum but after two years, the Board of Governors assumed responsibility for its operation and financial support. Until her death in 1978, Mrs. Oulton continued to run the museum.
Mrs. Oulton was a founding member of the Prince Edward Island Heritage Foundation. When the Heritage Foundation was incorporated in 1970, she was appointed to the first board of directors and served there until 1975. She was made an Honorary life member of the Heritage Foundation and later received an award of honour. In 1974 she was the runner-up for the woman of the year award. She is listed in the "Who's Who of American Women," 9th edition (1975-76), in the 10th edition (1977-78) and in the "Dictionary of International Biography" in 1977. Mrs. Oulton was also awarded the Queen's Silver Jubilee medal. Mrs. Oulton was an active member of St. Peter's Anglican Church and of the Alberton Women's institute. Mrs. Oulton was also an Alberton correspondent for the "Journal-Pioneer," a Prince Edward Island newspaper. Eileen Oulton died on 23 December 1978 and was buried at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Alberton, P.E.I.
