Ellis (Family)
Notice biographique
William Henry Rawle Ellis (1836-1909), youngest son of Robert Ellis (1797-1872) and Hannah Darby (1798-1891) of Summerside, Prince Edward Island. Robert Ellis came from Bideford, England as a cabinet-maker and the interior of St. John’s Anglican Church in St. Eleanors is evidence of his workmanship. William married Hannah Irons Preddy (1833-1873) daughter of Thomas Preedy (1803-1874) and Frances Moore (1800-1890) who emigrated prior to 1848 with 6 children and settled in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. William moved to New Zealand sometime after 1860, remarried, and died there years later. Hannah presumably lived with her sister Clarissa who had married William Weeks of Charlottetown in 1867. She died in their home at age 40. Hannah and William had one child, Robertina (1859-1889). In the 1881 census, she was described as unsound and was living with her grandmother Hannah Ellis and aunt and uncle Elizabeth Caroline Ellis (1832-1915) and Harry Compton Green (1817-1918) in Summerside.

Notice biographique
Thomas Preedy (1803-1874) and Frances Moore (1800-1890), emigrated prior to 1848 with 6 children and settled in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Thomas and Frances worked for many years as keeper and housekeeper of the Colonial Building and the family lived in the basement of the building. In 1858, their daugthter Hannah married William Henry Rawle Ellis (1836-1909), youngest son of Robert Ellis (1797-1872) and Hannah Darby (1798-1891) of Summerside, PEI. Hannah’s husband, William, moved to New Zealand sometime after 1860, remarried, and died there years later. Hannah presumably lived with her sister Clarissa who had married William Weeks of Charlottetown in 1867. She died in their home at age 40. Hannah and William had one child, Robertina (1859-1889). Historique de la conservation
Miss Helen Mills donated the album to the Town of Summerside in September 1972. It had been left to her by her mother's sister, Catherine Green, wife of Holden C. Mills. Catherine presumably inherited it from her mother Elizabeth Ellis who probably came into possession of the album following the death of her sister-in-law Hannah in 1873.
Présentation du contenu
The fonds consists of a small album measuring 12x16 cm and 5 cm deep with embossed covers decorated with bands of ivory. There are 37 portrait photos of average size 6x10 cm. Fourteen of the photos are tintype. They are exhibited back to back on pages slotted at the bottom. A typewritten note inside the front cover dated Sept. 1972 indicates that the pictures are of the Mills and/or Green families. Two of the photos are identified, one with the handwritten name on the reverse of Wm T. Roome who was the husband of Eliza Preedy, a sister to Hannah. The second known photo has been tentatively identified by descendant Dawn Ellis as Robert Ellis. Those two connections along with the signature of Mrs. W.H. Ellis eem to indicate the portraits are of the Preedy and Ellis families. Two PEI photographers are identified as G. P. Tanton of Charlottetown and J. P. Wood of Summerside. Other named photographers were in the United States. One photo is dated 1878. The last photo in the album is imprinted with the name of the late James Gourlie, Jr., who died at sea in 1868.
