History

John Thomas Gill was born on 15 July 1861, at Elliotvale, Prince Edward Island, the son of Richard Gill and Mary Murphy. Following an apprenticeship in blacksmithing with Wyatt and Burroughs in Highfield, he returned to Elliotvale in 1882 and established a forge on land given to him by his father. In 1885 a woodworking shop was added to the enterprise to meet the demand for sleighs, wagons and carts. As well as running a prospering business and raising a large family with his wife Mary (Murray), John pursued a life-long hobby of fiddling. He died in 1957 at the age of 96.
