Administrative history

The Grand Division of the Sons of Temperance of Prince Edward Island was established in Charlottetown in 1848 by R.G. Halls of Nova Scotia. The Sons of Temperance was a fraternal and prohibitionist organization that advocated abstinence from alcohol consumption. Its members were not permitted to buy, sell, or make alcoholic products. In its early years, the activities of the Grand Division of Prince Edward Island were focused on encouraging the reform of intemperate individuals, increasing membership of the organization, and persuading the inhabitants of the province to take the pledge of total abstinence. By the 1850s, the organization became increasingly focused on the legal prohibition of alcohol as its leading ideal. The group petitioned the Provincial Legislature requesting the introduction of stronger measures to suppress intemperance and pushing for the total abolition of the liquor traffic.
