Yeo, Helen Muriel

Biographical history

Helen Muriel Yeo was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on 19 May 1899 to William Lashbrook Yeo and Elizabeth Matilda Wyand. After graduation from Prince St. School and Prince of Wales College, she spent several years teaching at Prince St. School and the Model School at Prince of Wales before returning to Acadia University to complete her B.A. In 1946 she received her Master's degree in Education from Harvard University. Returning home she served as director of teacher training at Prince of Wales College, taught on CBC school broadcasts in the 1950s, and was a consultant for the Department of Education in English, social studies, and mathematics. She authored the textbook Language Comes Alive, a grade three textbook as well as contributing to teachers guidebooks and professional journals. She was very active in many organizations including the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Canadian Federation of University Women, The Royal Edward Chapter of the IODE, and the United Nations Association. Over the years she received many awards including a fellowship to the United Nations 11th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (1957), the Centennial Medal (1967), the George Croskery Award (Canadian College of Teachers) (1978) for contributions to Canadian education, and the Persons Award (1986) for contributions to the status of women. Helen Yeo died at Whisperwood Villa in Parkdale on 27 December 1994.

The fonds contains the personal and professional papers of Helen Muriel Yeo. These consist of handwritten notes, awards and certificates received, copies of publications, photocopies of newspaper clippings, and photographs.
