Biographical history

Henry Shearman (b. ca. 1803) was the son of William Shearman and Ann Whiffen, who were married 4 April 1793 at St. Peter Cornhill, London. On 7 August 1830, Henry married Caroline Bate, daughter of James Bate and Frances Ann Palmer, at Bishopsteignton, Devon. Their first two children were Henry

Scope and content

This collection consists of seven original letters written by Henry Shearman to his sister Marian Reynolds, who lived in England. The first letter (8 April 1836) is from Devonport, England, where Shearman and his family were waiting to embark on the ship "Castalia" towards Prince Edward Island. The other six letters were all written from PEI, from October 1836 to October 1843. Also included with the collection is a biographical sketch of Henry Shearman, written by Alejandro S. Milberg, and a transcription of the letters. A CD-ROM containing an electronic copy of the biographical sketch, transcripts of the letters, and digital copies (scans) of the original letters is also included.
