History

Samuel Holland was born in Ornear Nimwegen, Holland, ca. 1728. He entered the Dutch Army at age 17 (ca. 1745) and the British Army in 1754. He was sent to America in 1756 where he served in the Seven Years War. In 1764 he was appointed Surveyor-General of Quebec and Northern British North America. He carried out extensive surveys of British possessions in what is now Canada. During the American Revolution, Holland was promoted to the rank of major. He settled in Quebec in 1780. He was married twice: first to Gertrude Hasse in 1749 and then to Marie Josephie Rolette of Quebec ca. 1764. He had ten children. Holland died in Quebec in 1801.
