History
Carrie Ellen Holman was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island on 1 April 1877, to Robert T. Holman and Ellen McEwen. The first Island woman to attend McGill University in Montreal, Holman graduated in 1900. Carrie worked in England in 1916 with the Red Cross during World War l. During this time, she wrote "In the Day of Battle." Carrie returned to PEI and settled in Summerside. She taught school, established the Canadian Handicraft Guild on PEI, and was also the secretary of the Children's Aid Society in Prince county. Carrie also established the first girl guide company in Prince County in 1936. From 1937 to 1949, Carrie was the Prince County Division Co-ordinator and from 1949 until 1954, she was the Provincial Guide Commissioner. The context of her radio broadcasts concerning Island History done in 1948, was compiled and developed into book form resulting in "Our Island Story," published in 1949, the proceeds of which Carrie donated to the Prince County Hospital. Carrie's siblings were Sarah Maude, Norah Kathleen, Robert Claude, Harry Tinson, William L., James Leroy, and Gwen Gladys. Carrie died in Summerside on 14 April 1972.
