The Howatt family lived in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Hiram Howatt son of Wilson and Rachel Howatt, was born in 1890. Hiram was a cyclist in the Senior Road Racing Group and spent some time in western Canada prior to his marriage to Wanda Lea. Wanda, daughter of Brenton and Blanche (Lord) Lea, was born in 1902. She attended school in Tryon and studied music in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. She also worked in Waltham, Massachusetts prior to marrying Hiram. The couple had three children including Doreen, Blanche, and Lea Erskine.

The Howatt family lived on the corner of Prince and Euston Streets, and later on Kings Square in Charlottetown. Wanda was an active member of Trinity United Church, a member of the Willing Circle of Kings Daughters, and a charter member of the United Church Women. She was also very active in her local Meals on Wheels program. Hiram died 21 October 1964 at the age of seventy-four. His wife Wanda died 27 May 1989 at the age of eighty-seven.
