History

The Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E), a patriotic, non-sectarian, non-partisan, and philanthropic Canadian women's organization was founded in Canada in 1900. The mission of the IODE is to improve the quality of life for children, youth, and those in need through educational, social services, and citizenship programs. The vision of the IODE is to improve the physical and emotional health and expand the educational opportunities of all Canadians within a unified country. IODE was previously known as the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, but today IODE is not an acronym. The Earl of Hillsborough Chapter was founded in 1940 and the executive for charter #1547 included: Eulalia Weeks (Regent), Della Moore (1st Vice Regent), Willie Phillips (2nd Vice Regent), Helen Hogan Grant (Secretary), Fran Boyles (Treasurer), Lillian Woodburn (Education Secretary), Helen Hogan (Echoes), and Cora Nicholson (Standard Bearer). Marathon Bridge has been the Chapter's major fundraiser, along with Rose Day, Bring and Buy, bake, rummage, and calendar sales. The Chapter has supported the PEI Music Festival, school food projects and milk funds, school book purchases, sewing and knitting for hospitals and various institutions, along with many other worthy causes. Th Earl of Hillsborough Chapter was still active in Prince Edward Island as of 2009.
