John "Spurgeon" Jenkins was born in Mount Albion, Prince Edward Island, to Robert Harold Jenkins (1849-1932) and Margaret (Young) Jenkins (1861-1934), on 22 January 1891. He served in the First World War with the Eighth Siege Battery. Spurgeon Jenkins worked for many years as a special constable looking after fish and wildlife for the provincial government and served in the R. C. M. P. for 25 years. His Charlottetown Guardian column, "The Hunter's Corner," was first published on 11 December 1944 and continued for many years. As well as being a game warden for the province he was an avid hunter, outdoorsman, and conservationist, and was frequently a guest on the "Outdoor Forum" and other local radio and television programs as a member of panels discussing hunting and wildlife. He began his work as a tax collector for the City of Charlottetown on 27 February 1957, later resigning that position in April of 1961. Spurgeon Jenkins died at Beach Grove Home in February 1975. He was married to the former Janie Foster and had four children: Harold, Ronald, Marie, and Diane.

This fonds consists of twenty-one 13.5 x 20 mm bound yearly journals kept by Spurgeon Jenkins. Daily entries consist of comments on the weather, visits with family and friends and other social outings, and descriptions of hunting trips with details of game shot. As well, Mr. Jenkins commented on work-related outings and interactions, and various legal actions which resulted from his work as a game warden and later as a tax collector for the City of Charlottetown. The journals contain some addresses of family and friends preceding the January 1st entries as well as various notes made in the cash account and bills receivable sections after the December 31 entries.
