Biographical history

James Cross was born in Babcary, England on 14 April 1826, the son of Thomas Cross. He was the first cousin of Mary Ann Cross, wife of James Carew of Bungay, Prince Edward Island. In 1853 he entered the service of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, son of Queen Victoria. He accompanied the Prince on his tour of North America in 1860.

Custodial history

The letter has remained in the hands of Cross' cousin's descendants in Prince Edward Island to date. Unfortunately at least one page and the cover is missing.

Scope and content

The fonds contians a photocopy of a letter written by James Cross from Quebec on 18 August 1860 to ahis cousin Mary Ann (Cross) Carew who lived in Bungay, Prince Edward Island at the time of the visit of the Prince of Wales. He talks about family matters and expresses his pleasure with Prince Edward Island. The fonds also contains a photograph of James Cross taken about the same time.
