Biographical history

James Harvey Bishop graduated from the Union Commercial College in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in 1928, Prince of Wales College in 1931, Dalhousie University in 1935, the Free Church of Scotland College, Edinburgh, Scotland in 1938 and was licensed and ordained in the latter year. His first ministry was with the Free Church in Scotland (MacDonaldite section) in Prince Edward Island. In 1954 he became affiliated with the Free Church of Scotland in Scotland and was appointed as the first Moderator of the North American Synod. In 1960 he was received into the Presbyterian Church in Canada and in 1967 received his B.D. from the United College (now Winnipeg University), Winnipeg, Manitoba. He served as Moderator of the Presbytery of Winnipeg and of the Synod of Manitoba and North Western Ontario of the
Presbyterian Church of Canada in 1963-64. He also prepared and delivered radio messages and is the author of the book " The Church of Scotland in Prince Edward Island (MacDonaldite Section". Reverend Bishop retired in 1973 but continued to serve as visiting minister and supply pastor at Winnipeg churches and also as "fill-in" minister during summer vacations in Prince Edward Island. He was honored by a celebration at Clyde River, PEI by the PEI Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Canada on the 50th anniversary of his ordination, 13 July 1988

Scope and content

The fonds consists of the writings of James Harvey Bishop and include his thesis for his degree from United College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, essays, sermons, radio messages and the draft and published version of his book " The Church of Scotland in Prince Edward Island (MacDonaldite Section)". There is also a scrapbook kept by Reverend Bishop containing cards and programs but primarily clippings of inspirational poems and stories with some handwritten notes in the margins.
