Scope and content

The collection contains 4 images of Don Messer and his Islanders, of Marg Osburne and Charlie Chamberlain, and three long play Sound recordings of the Islanders, Marg and Charlie, and Catherine McKinnon. Don Messer & His Islanders was a popular radio and television musical group for several decades beginning with their first radio broadcast in Saint John in 1934 as the New Brunswick Lumberjacks. Names and band members changed over the years. Charlie Chamberlain played guitar and sang with the band. Marg Osburne also sang with the band, often with Charlie. The group was based for many years at CFCY in Charlottetown. Catherine McKinnon also made her radio debut in Saint John, N.B. at the age of nine. She was a veteran of the mass media when she joined Don Messer's Jubilee in 1963 after graduation from Mount St. Vincent Academy in Halifax.
