Biographical history
John Darrach, son of Malcolm Darrach of Covehead, Prince Edward Island, was born on 29 April 1817. He married Elizabeth Semple (b.1826), daughter of James Semple and Mary Inglis of New Glasgow on 18 February 1847 with whom he had 9 children: Malcolm Scott, James Semple, William Alexander, Duncan, John Amon, Elizabeth Mary, Janet Ann, Alexander Campbell, Sarah Jane. A shipbuilder by trade, in 1864 Darrach built the brig "Pakeha" and in December of that year set sail with a crew and 32 passengers including his wife and family for New Zealand. Settling on 57 hectares of waste land at Matakana, he proceeded to build two vessels in partnership with William Bagnall who had also emigrated on the "Pakeha". In 1866, he purchased a farm, later known as "Rosebank", at the tip of the Mahurangi Peninsula and built 19 vessels in the next 14 years. He died on 27 October 1897.

Orr, William

Biographical history
William Orr, one of five sons of Robert Orr and Margaret Crawford, was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland, on the 11 October 1813. In 1819, William, his parents, and seven other siblings emigrated to Prince Edward Island and settled in New Glasgow. William married Janet Semple (1822-1902) and they had twelve children: James, William, Robert J., Oliver O., Lemuel, Albert, Richard, Mark, Lizzie, Mary, Marguerite, and Hallie. In the late 1870s, William and Janet moved to Hollister, California. William died in San Filipe, California on the 24 April 1894.

Bulman, Benjamin

Biographical history
Benjamin Bulman, shipbilder and farmer of New Glasgow Road, Prince Edward Island was born circa 1822, the son of John B. Bulman and Mary Jane Roper. On 24 February 1852 he married Margaret Semple, daughter of James Semple and Mary Inglis. Their son James married Frances Bagnall. Benjamin died 6 December 1892.
Custodial history
These letters were kept in the Darrach family in New Zealand until 1968 when they were given to the donor.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of two letters to John Darrach in New Zealand. One was written by William Orr in San Felipe, California on the 25 January 1879 and talks of ships and the shipping trade from PEI to Boston and Newfoundland. Also included is a typed transcript of the letter. The second letter was written to Darrach in 1878 by Benjamin Bulman from New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island and gives considerable genealogical information about the residents of that community, in particular the Orr and Bulman families, weather, crops and market conditions, happenings in the church, and the state of various businesses in New Glasgow and the surrounding area including Hunter River.
