Administrative history

The Margate Carriage Shop and Forge was founded by William Tuplin ca. 1864. The carriage shop consisted of four rooms: one for construction, another for painting, a show room , and a forge. The shop was taken over by apprentices William Pound in 1867, Frank Marks in 1905, Elton Sharpe in 1947, and Edward Andrews in 1967. Although carriages were not built in the later years, sleighs continued to be built, as well as other items such as the seats for the New London United Church in 1953. After collecting antiques for many years, Edward Andrews placed his collection in the factory and called it the "Old Carriage Factory Museum."
