History

The family of Dr. Christopher Lane and Caroline Burns Lane lived near Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in the mid nineteenth century. In 1868 the family moved to California. Two of their children were Maude and Franklin. Maude was active in the movement to promote women in the workforce during World War I. Her brother, Franklin K. Lane (1865-1921), graduated from the University of California in 1886 and worked as a journalist and attorney before entering politics. He held public office in the City of San Francisco and later served as Secretary of the Interior (1913-1920) under the Wilson and Roosevelt administrations. Franklin married Anne Wintermute of Elmira, New York, and had two children, Nancy and Franklin Jr.
