History

Born near Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on 15 July 1865, the son of Dr. Christopher Lane and Caroline Burns Lane, Franklin K. Lane moved with his family to California when he was three years old. Graduating from the University of California with high honors in 1886, Franklin Lane worked as a journalist and attorney before entering politics. He held public office in the City of San Franciso and served as Secretary of the Interior (1913-1920) under the Wilson and Roosevelt administrations. He married Anne Wintermute of Elmira, New York, and had two children, Nancy and Franklin Jr.
