Biographical history

Laurie Bell of Huntley, Prince Edward Island, operated Hillbilly Books bookstore at his home near Alberton in 2000.

Custodial history

The published works sold by Laurie Bell were gradually acquired by him from a variety of sources during the conduct of his used books business.

Scope and content

The collection formed the basis of the reference library in the MacNaught History Centre and Archives Reading Room when the material was purchased from book dealer Laurie Bell. Wyatt Heritage Properties manager Allan Rankin and archivist Faye Pound arranged the transaction thus creating the core reference library.

The collection consists of 155 books or booklets, some of them considered to be rare. There is a 1770 textbook on navigation, a P.E. Island Calendar 1864, and a copy of MacKinnon and Warburton's Past and Present of Prince Edward Island. The collection is also comprised of thirty PEI telephone directories from 1963 to 1999. There are four 1903-1904 issues of the PEI Magazine, a 1943 Year Book of Registered Motor Vehicles, a Montreal Star WWI war map, and a 1963 promotional booklet on the village of St. Eleanors. The collection also contains a minute book from the Mount Pleasant Women's Institute, dated 1922-1937.
