Le Centre de recherches acadiennes de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard

The Centre for Acadian Research of Prince Edward Island's archival sector includes approximately 175 private fonds, which amount to 90 metres of textual records from Island organizations or individuals who have marked the history of the Acadian community. The Centre preserves archival fonds of Acadian organizations such as the Société Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin, Jeunesse acadienne and the Agricultural Exhibition and Acadian Festival. It also preserves archival fonds on famous individuals such as Aubin-Edmond Arsenault, J.-Edmond Arsenault, Benoît F. Poirier and Sister Antoinette DesRoches, c.n.d. Since 1985, the Centre for Acadian Research is also depositor of the Acadian Museum's archives. The archival fonds also contain over 280 sound archives (218 audiocassettes and 62 videocassettes) pertaining to the folklore and oral history of Island Acadians. They contain valuable information on Island Acadian life, especially the cooperative movement of the Acadians of the Evangeline area, the Island Acadian women, as well as the traditional life of Island Acadians including tales, songs, legends, various types of statements, life cycles, annual festivities, popular remedies, weather forecasts, frolics and instrumental music. The archival sector includes about 33,000 images (15,000 photographs and 18,000 negatives) which reflect the traditional and contemporary life of Island Acadians. Many of the images are from La Voix acadienne, the Island's only French language newspaper, which has been in publication since 1976. The sector also contains photos of various people, establishments, places and events which are linked to the Island's Acadian community.
