Administrative history

The Legislative Library on Prince Edward Island originated with the establishment of the Legislature in 1773. It was originally housed on the second floor of Province House in Charlottetown. In 1905, as a result of a bequest from Thomas Walker Dodd, it became known as the Legislative and Dodd Library. In 1930, following a bequest from the family of Robert Harris, a new building was constructed and it housed both the Legislative and Public Library and the Harris Memorial Art Gallery. This building was replaced in 1964 by the Confederation Centre Library and in 1971 the Legislative Library became the responsibility of the Department of Education and functioned as an adjunct of the Confederation Centre Library.
