Scope and content

The fonds consists of photocopies of letters from Captain Robert Stewart to George Washington in which he discusses his plans either to raise a battalion in return for a commission as Major Commandant or to return to Great Britain and purchase a company and become involved in trade. Later letters include descriptions of the Island of St. John, references to Captain Holland's survey, and accounts of the proposed methods and final procedures of granting the lands on the Island and his endeavours to be one of the grantees.
