History

William MacPhail emigrated from Nairn, Scotland to Nova Scotia in 1833 along with his wife Mary MacPherson and their two year old son William. The family relocated to Orwell, Prince Edward Island in 1844. The couple's other children include Isabella, Janetta, and possibly Lydia. Their son William (1831-1905) farmer, teacher, and school inspector, married Catherine Moore Smith (1834-1920) in 1858. Most notable among their ten children are Sir Andrew MacPhail, christened John Andrew (1864-1938), author, pathologist, and professor, and William Matheson (1872-1949), a prominent engineer and teacher.
