History

Donald MacRae of Scotland served as a private soldier in the Canadian Regiment of Fencibles until 1804. After being discharged, Donald settled in Lot 49 in Prince Edward Island with his wife Mary and their six children, including Donald, Euphemia, Alexander, Margaret, Catherine and Malcolm. Son Donald married Catherine MacLennan and they had eight children, including Samuel, Effie, Catherine, Margaret, Ann, Mary, Sarah and Daniel.

Samuel, who married Elizabeth McGregor in December 1877, was very active in the militia from at least 1868. In 1875 he was named Captain in the Charlottetown Provisional Battalion of Infantry in Militia District 12. Samuel was also a merchant in Charlottetown between at least 1876 and 1891 and for a time operated a hotel in Charlottetown. Samuel died in 1904.

Daniel was also active within the militia between 1868 and 1876. He married Catherine MacEachern 12 December 1882 and the couple had five children, including Catherine, Margaret, Stephan, John and Helena. Daniel died in 1920.
