History

Alexander MacRae (?-1869) emigrated to Prince Edward Island ca.1804 from Glenelg, Inverness shire, Scotland. He married Sarah MacGregor (?-1843) in 1823 and they had eleven children. Their eighth child, Alexander Malcolm, was born on 21 March 1836. He married Annie Mellish (1844-1931) of Waterside, near Pownal, on 7 December 1865. They had eleven children: Mary Helen Moor (1866-1912), Sarah Elizabeth (1867-1953), Florence (1868-1870), Beatrice (1871-1957), Frederick Beaumont (1872-1946), Cornelia Gertrude (1872-?), Lilly Isabella (1876-1878), William Alexander Malcolm (1878-1938), Daniel Peter (1881-1973), Robert (1882-1961), and Alex Jones (1884-1919).

Alexander MacRae, Captain of the 2nd Queens Co. Regiment, also operated a farm at Waterside. He had registered short horn cattle and was a member of the PEI Fruit Growers Association (1904-1905). He was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Queens County on 27 August 1889 and Wharfinger of the Pownal Pier on 5 October 1885. Alexander died the 22 March 1913.

Mary Helen MacRae worked as a dressmaker. Frederick, Robert, and Dan all volunteered in the South African War (1889-1902). Robert and Dan eventually settled in Saskatchewan. Frederick was an instructor of machine gunnery in Shorncliffe, England, and a Major in the 82nd Abegweit Light Infantry during World War II. Alexander Jones was killed in action in France in 1918. William Alexander Malcolm was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Queen's County on 22 June 1925.
