Notice biographique

T. Edgar MacNutt was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on 27 June 1882, the son of Leslie and Amelia Jane MacNutt. He was married to the former Marian Cotton and had two sons, Walter L. and W. Stuart as well as one daughter Mary. Throughout his lifetime he was closely involved in the military, joining the Charlottetown Engineers in 1900 and later transferring to the 82nd Regiment where he held the rank of Lieutenant and then Captain. He went overseas as a Major in the 105th Battalion in World War I where he was seconded to the Imperials for service in France from 1917-1919. He was Secretary-Treasurer of Hyndman & Co. until WW I and returned from the war to the insurance business. Vitally concerned with the life of his community and the betterment of his fellowman he served as secretary-treasurer of the Charlottetown School Board, trustee of the Protestant Orphanage, member of the board of the Free Dispensary and the Protestant Welfare Bureau. He was one of the founders of the Charlottetown Branch of the Canadian Legion and of the PEI Historical Society. Intensely interested in all aspects of the history of his native province, he kept copious research notes and papers relating to this history. He also wrote and delivered many historical addresses as well as more voluminous works such as "Notes on the military history of P.E.Island: British period, 1758-1900" and "Notes on the military history (French regime) of Prince Edward Island". Major MacNutt died on 6 August 1967.
