Biographical history
Mary (Cornfoot) Brehaut was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on 7 February 1887. Educated at West Kent School and Prince of Wales College, Mary returned to West Kent School to teach until her marriage in 1912 to William Brehaut with whom she had three children. A member of numerous community organizations such as the PEI Hospital Auxiliary, the PEI Teachers Federation and the I.O.D.E., Mary was particularly known for her involvement in the revival of the PEI Historical Society in 1953. She was also actively involved in the PEI Heritage Foundation. A promoter of Prince Edward Island history, Mrs. Brehaut edited five volumes on the subject including "Pioneers on the Island", Vols. I and II, "Historic highlights", "Historic sidelights" and "Folklore of Prince Edward Island". Mary Brehaut died in Charlottetown on 28 February 1975.

Scope and content
The collection consists of the papers of Captain Angus MacAulay (?-1810) of Halifax, Nova Scotia and Pinette, Prince Edward Island; papers of Charles (? - before 1875) and Elizabeth Stewart (1783-1875) of Pinette, and a circa 1793 muster roll of the Loyal Independent Caledonian Company of Volunteers. The Captain MacAulay papers, dating 1804-1809, include personal accounts, shipping records, ships logs of the "Archangel" and "Bonne Citoyenne", and legal papers involving Capt. MacAulay. This collection also includes papers of Charles Stewart and his wife Elizabeth, widow of Capt. Angus MacAulay who drowned in 1810 in Charlottetown. The Stewart documents include personal accounts and receipts, correspondence, land agreements and papers regarding legal action between Charles and Robert Stewart dating between 1813 and 1832. The collection also includes one file of notes compiled by Mary Brehaut regarding Angus MacAulay of Belfast and other Belfast or Selkirk settlers.

General note
These documents were originally thought to have been papers of Angus MacAulay (1759-1827) who had been an agent to the Earl of Selkirk. He emigrated to the Belfast district of Prince Edward Island in 1803, where he ministered the Selkirk settlers and was the community physician, schoolmaster and later was elected to the Legislative Assembly
