Alexander Wallace Matheson was born on 11 June 1903 in Bellevue, Prince Edward Island, to Archibald A. Matheson and Margaret MacPherson. He married Helen Betty Farquharson, daughter of Ernest B. Farquharson of Charlottetown, on 25 August 1937. They had five children: Frances Janet, Ellen Margaret, James Alexander, Thomas Allan, and Andrew.

After receiving his early education at the local rural school in Bellevue, Matheson went on to study at Prince of Wales College. He then taught at Grandview and Valleyfield schools before returning to Charlottetown to study law. He articled in the office of D. A. MacKinnon until the latter
