Cowan Rankin McKinnon was born on 2 February 1863 in Canoe Cove, Prince Edward Island, the son of Donald McKinnon and Isabella McKay. He married Georgiana Oliver, daughter of John Robert Oliver and Mary Ann Hardy of Kildare Capes. The McKinnons moved to Bucksport, Maine, in the 1890s where they farmed. The couple had five children: George Roy McKinnon, Edna Bell McKinnon, Robert Oliver McKinnon, Arthur McKinnon, and Cowan Rankin McKinnon, Jr. Cowan died 30 March 1935 in Bangor, Maine.
