Notice biographique

The Montague Women's Institute was organized on 13 May 1914. The first president was Mrs. David Wright, wife of Rev. David Wright. Early meetings were held in the Institute Rooms (which were also used by the Farmer's Institute in Montague) as well as in members' homes.

During the first World War, the women of the Montague WI focused their efforts on war work. They knit socks, prepared care packages, and raised money for the war effort. The Montague Women's Institute was also very involved in the local school. They helped to raise money for the school which was built in 1925, and regularly purchased much-needed supplies such as desks, blinds, pencil sharpeners, globes, books, and other items.

In more recent years, the Montague Women's Institute remained active in the local community. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, the annual Music Festival, and programs such as Meals in Motion were just some of the causes taken up by Institute members. The Montague Women's Institute disbanded in 2002.

Historique de la conservation

It appears some of the minute books were found in the Provincial Building and were returned to the Montague Women's Institute

Présentation du contenu

The fonds consists of minutes of the Montague Women's Institute spanning the years 1916-2000, as well as an account book dated 1990-2000. The minutes include accounts of the regular monthly meetings as well as some fincial information, membership lists, and names of executive officers. The 1990-2000 minute book also contains a colour photograph (dated December 1996) taped to the inside front cover. This is not a complete set of minute books and there are some gaps in coverage. The fonds also contains an undated book of recipes and a file of miscellaneous papers which include a 1934 Women's Institute Handbook, a 1932 Montague Women's Institute annual report, a history of Montague (dated 1972), and a short history (two paragraphs) about the Montague Baptist Church.
