Historique

The O'Leary United Church, as did many of its counterparts, had its roots in the Bible Christian, Methodist, and Presbyterian denominations in Prince Edward Island. The Bible Christian circuit, ministered to by Francis Metherell from 1847 to 1875, encompassed West Cape (including Cascumpeque and Bideford) and West Devon while the Methodist congregations were located in Bethel, Glenwood, Knutsford, Cambellton, etc. At some point in the latter part of the 19th century, the Bible Christians merged with the Methodists and in 1925 this circuit became the West Cape charge of the United Church of Canada. In 1887 the Presbyterian congregations of Bloomfield (originally part of the Alberton charge) O'Leary, and Brae joined to form one charge which became part of the United Church of Canada following church union in 1925. The newly erected Presbyterian Church became the O'Leary United Church. In 1968 the Bloomfield church closed and the congregation began to worship in the O'Leary Church. In 1969 the West Cape and O'Leary charges officially amalgamated into the current pastoral charge.
