John Robert Oliver was born 25 June 1843, the son of John Oliver and Catherine Platts of Kildare Capes, Prince Edward Island. On 19 January 1864 in Montrose, PEI, he married Mary Ann Hardy of Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. They raised a family of nine children one of whom, Georgiana, born 16 November 1866, married Cowan Rankin McKinnon of O'Leary, PEI. The McKinnons moved to Bucksport, Maine, in the 1890s.
