History

On 14 February 1962 approximately 275 United Church women from across Prince Edward Island met at Trinity United Church in Charlottetown and formed the Presbyterial United Church Women of Prince Edward Island. Units were organized in most congregations and in all Pastoral Charges with the Presbytery as the provincial unit. The women of the United Church had always participated in their congregations and communities through organizations such as the Ladies Aid Society, the Women's Missionary Society and the Women's Association. The purpose of the new organization was to "unite women of the congregation for the total mission of the church and to provide a medium through which we may express our loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness, study, fellowship and service". Their programming has been extensive: they've organized youth groups, retreats, care of the ill and elderly, supplies for the church and manse, and contributed time and funds to other organizations in the community.
