History
The incorporation of the Prince Edward Island Potato Growers' Association in April 1921 signalled the first cooperative attempt to represent the interests of Island potato producers. The Association's stated objectives were to disseminate information on standardization, marketing, and the eradication of disease; to encourage proper cultural practices and desirable varieties in order to improve seed; and to investigate possible markets and the utilization of surplus and cull-potatoes. It had the power to carry on the business of retail and wholesale merchants "to trade and deal in all produce, provisions, materials and goods of every description" and to act as general warehousemen.
By 1928, membership was increased to 2500 and the Association had experienced some success in cooperative marketing. However, six years later dealer opposition had scuttled an attempt to introduce a voluntary price-pooling system and no further attempts to organize a comprehensive marketing system were made by the Association. Records for the Association are scarce but it appears to have carried on at least until 1950, to be replaced in 1954 by the Potato Producers' Association of Prince Edward Island.
