History

In 1860 Prince of Wales College succeeded the earlier classical Central Academy which had opened in 1836. Commonly referred to as PWC, the College offered two years of high school and two years of university and included a Normal School for the training of teachers. In 1966 it became a university with degree-granting status but in 1969 was amalgamated with St. Dunstan's University to become the University of Prince Edward Island. The buildings became the home of Holland College, a technical college.
