Biographical history

Robert Sharpe was born in Dalbeattie, Scotland, August 1797, and engaged as a journeyman joiner in Dumfriestown, in 1826. Sometime prior to 1836 he emigrated to Pleasant Valley, Prince Edward Island, where he practised as wheelwright and carpenter for almost 50 years. Custodial history

Scope and content

The fonds consists of a microfilm copy of Robert Sharpe's day book [inscribed No. 4] from 1836 to 1878, an affidavit of Robert Sharpe, dated 1881, that a particular gridiron had been the property of Robert Burns, and a letter from John Sharpe to the Intercolonial Express Co., dated 1885, regarding the delay in receipt of a parcel. The day book lists the daily work performed by R. Sharpe such as the making of barrows, wheels, ploughs, beds, coffins, windows, etc. and the fee charged. There are also some references to work on vessels. Often the client's name is recorded including institutions such as the Infirmary and families such as Irving, Thorburn, Nicholson, Kennedy, Bowness, Bagnall, Sutherland, etc. Payment, often in produce, is recorded in the later years.
