Notice biographique

Florence Mae Patterson was born 11 February 1904, the daughter of Ambrose Silliphant of Hunter River and Julia Binns of New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island. Her brother William M. was born on 29 August 1900. When William went to California in 1924 to study medicine, the family and Wellington Patterson moved with him. Wellington and Florence married on 8 May 1926 in Hollywood, California. Florence and "Well" moved back to PEI shortly thereafter to live on the Patterson homestead in Hunter River and to take an active part in the life of that community.

William completed his medical training and joined the U.S. Navy in 1930. He was stationed in the Philippines and during the war was taken prisoner by the Japanese. He survived the four years (1941-1945) in the prison camp recorded in his Diary and returned to California to practice medicine until his death in 1967.

This fonds consists of a copy of the 150 page manuscript entitled "Under the Japs in Bilibid" by Rear Admirable Wm. M. Silliphant; a taped interview with Florence Silliphant Patterson regarding her family and community life in Hunter River ca. 1930's to 1983; and two copy prints of a PEI Cadet Camp and Tuxis boys.
